When Was Your Last Checkup? What You Should Get Done Based on Your Age

Most people visit a doctor when something hurts or feels wrong. But preventive care works differently — its goal is to catch problems before they cause symptoms, and to keep you healthy for the long term. A routine checkup is not a sign that something is wrong. It is one of the smartest investments you can make in your future.

At Galenos Medical Center, we provide preventive care for adults 18 and older in Hialeah Gardens and Pembroke Pines. Here is a practical guide to the screenings, tests, and conversations that matter most at each stage of adult life.

Your 20s: Build the Foundation

Your twenties are a great time to establish a relationship with a primary care provider and set a baseline for your health. Even if you feel completely well, certain measurements and conversations are worth having now.

Recommended for adults in their 20s:

  • Blood pressure check — at least every two years if normal
  • Cholesterol screening — starting at 20, frequency based on results
  • Blood glucose or A1C — especially with a family history of diabetes
  • STI screenings — based on sexual activity and risk factors
  • Mental health conversation — stress, anxiety, and mood are valid medical topics
  • Skin check — particularly if you spend time outdoors
  • Vaccination review — flu shot annually, Tdap booster, HPV series if not completed

This is also the right time to discuss your family medical history in detail. Knowing what conditions run in your family helps your provider recommend earlier or more frequent screenings.

Your 30s: Stay Ahead of Silent Risks

Many chronic conditions — high blood pressure, prediabetes, elevated cholesterol — develop quietly during the thirties. You may feel fine while these conditions are progressing. Regular checkups are how you find out before they become harder to manage.

Add these to your preventive care routine in your 30s:

  1. 1Blood pressure — annually or more often if elevated
  2. 2Fasting blood glucose or A1C — every one to three years
  3. 3Lipid panel — every four to six years, or more often with risk factors
  4. 4Thyroid function — especially for women or those with fatigue, weight changes, or mood shifts
  5. 5Vitamin D and B12 levels — deficiencies are common and often undetected
  6. 6Eye exam — every one to two years
  7. 7Dental exam — twice yearly
  8. 8Skin cancer screening — annually if you have risk factors

If you are planning a pregnancy or have recently had one, your provider can also discuss postpartum health, hormonal changes, and any screenings specific to your situation.

Your 40s: When Screenings Become More Specific

The forties bring a shift in preventive care. Several important screenings are recommended for the first time during this decade, and the frequency of others increases.

  • Mammogram — recommended starting at 40 for average-risk women (discuss with your provider)
  • Colorectal cancer screening — starting at 45 for average-risk adults
  • Blood pressure — at every visit
  • Diabetes screening — every one to three years
  • Lipid panel — every four to six years, or annually with risk factors
  • Hearing test — if you notice any changes
  • Bone density scan — earlier if you have risk factors for osteoporosis
  • Cardiovascular risk assessment — your provider may calculate your 10-year heart disease risk

This is also a good time to review your medications and supplements with your provider, discuss any changes in sleep, energy, or mood, and update your vaccinations including the shingles vaccine.

Your 50s and Beyond: Comprehensive Prevention

Preventive care becomes even more important after 50. The screenings recommended during this decade can detect serious conditions — including several cancers — at their most treatable stages.

Key screenings for adults 50 and older:

  • Colorectal cancer screening — colonoscopy or stool-based test
  • Lung cancer screening — low-dose CT scan for current or former heavy smokers
  • Prostate cancer discussion — PSA test conversation for men starting at 50
  • Bone density scan — recommended for women 65+, earlier with risk factors
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening — once for men 65–75 who have smoked
  • Annual flu vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine
  • Shingles vaccine — two doses recommended starting at 50
  • Cognitive health conversation — memory, focus, and mood changes are worth discussing

Your provider can help you prioritize which screenings are most relevant based on your personal and family history, lifestyle, and current health status.

Make Your Next Checkup Count

A preventive visit is most valuable when you come prepared. Before your appointment, write down any symptoms — even minor ones — along with your current medications, supplements, and any family health history updates. Do not wait for something to feel wrong.
